One of the real strengths of Costa Rica as a vacation destination is just how good it is at doing action and adventure-type getaways. Costa Rica adventure tours are available virtually everywhere though in general there are two rules to consider.

Firstly, it is generally safest to book Costa Rica adventure tours through the hotel you are staying at if they offer such a service because it helps to protect you should anything go wrong. Speak to others who have been to Costa Rica and you will likely hear a number of stories of innocent tourists like you signing up for an adventure tour, paying their money in advance (which can come to several hundred dollars depending on what you want to do) and then being left high and try as a dodgy tout suddenly disappears and leaves you with nothing.

By booking through your hotel you can be reasonably sure that the adventure tour operators are legitimate because any problems in the past will hopefully have been ironed out by previous guests. For a further level of protection, Costa Rica is full of tourists, particularly in high season (January to April) so don’t be afraid to ask for advice from others by going into bars or restaurants and asking where people are staying, what trips they’ve done and what they would recommend.

I spoke to several American tourists while I was there and did my best to point them in the right directions.

One thing that I have in common with a lot of my close friends is they love to travel. Travel opens the world up for new possibilities. It is part of the adventurous spirit that we all have. I have traveled to Mexico several times by myself and with friends and family. I have jumped on a plane for a two day trip to Japan to meet potential business partners. My wife and I have taken our kids to New York City for a winter trip, Cancun for a party trip, England and Scotland for an adventure trip, and Hawaii for a family trip. Despite the cost and despite what other things I have had in my life, my travels are what have given me the most juice and excitement.

I just received a phone call yesterday from a friend of mine who was tired of the working rat race. He traded in his jeep for a van and got himself a Western Hemisphere map. Currently he is in Ensenada, surfing the waves and meeting new friends. His plan is to travel from Mexico, through Central and South America and make a final stop in Argentina or Brazil. He has been on this trip for more than a month and he is only made it to Ensenada. He has a long way to go on his journey, but he doesn’t have any hurry. He has volunteered for a week at an orphanage and he is going to take some Spanish classes these coming weeks. It is an adventure that most people dream about but never do.

Another friend of mine, was laid off from his job a few months ago, and could not find another job. Instead of feeling sorry for himself and moping around the house, he took a three month trip to Eastern Europe. He visited historic sites, and made it as far as Turkey. He had taken similar trips to Australia, New Zealand, and Western Europe in the past. Now he is back in Seattle, working again and probably planning his next big trip.

Does hard, honest work pay off in the world of professional sport? Does cycling reward its faithful servants? I think we all wish the answer to these questions was a resounding “YES!”, we all want so bad to believe in the rewards of hard, honest efforts. The real picture, however, is more complex. Much more complex.

We yearn for fairness in sport, much like we do in life. Spectators discuss whether or not the victory was deserved. Did the best man win? We want the hard working, “under-dog” to win.

But we know better. There are no “deserved” victories or fairness in sports. We have lots of rules and regulations and even a few athletes that try and cheat. We even have this concept of fair play, but there are no governing body that evaluates hard work and reward efforts based on this. Long, faithful service does not make a bit of a difference. And quite honestly, it shouldn’t. This is professional sports. Everyone is in it for themselves and it’s up to you to create your own future.

And because of this “lawlessness”, because there is no system that rewards hard work, we all rejoice when that hard, honest and faithful athlete once in a great while wins. We say to ourselves “he really deserved to win”.

Extreme Sports and Urban Sports
Many youngsters and teenagers living in urban cities seek thrill and excitement by engaging in different types of sports. These sports usually require minimum gear, and can take place in almost any venue. Since they are commonly seen in cities, these sports activities are given the name “urban sports”.
But don’t confuse urban sports with extreme sports. City activities are often safe, when caution is exercised. Extreme sports are much more dangerous exercises. They involve public displays of dangerous stunts. The whole idea of extreme activities is to push the human limit. Of course, in exchange for all the thrill and excitement, a certain amount of risk is necessary.
If you are interested in taking up a sport, take a look at the urban activities in your area. It could be street soccer, skateboarding, stunt biking, or even basketball. As long as the sport takes place in the city, it’s considered an urban sport. If you observe closely, you will quickly realize that there are some similarities between these activities.

Only the boats that conform to a particular class can participate in off shore power boat racing. These boats are usually the expensive and large models that are specially built for durability and speed and under the pounding ocean waves which can be quite unpredictable.

Taking part in off shore power boat racing involves expending large amounts of money on fuel. It burns fuel up very fast taking into account the speed of the boat and the distance covered. Power boats are expensive and the cost of the competition is high. People who participate in power boat racing are participating in what is called an elite sport. Power racing is a team sport and is usually sponsored. It is supported and funded by both commercial sponsors and private funding. However, it is still considered to be an amateur sport.

Off shore boat racing is actually a regulated sport. Initially, its focus was on endurance racing but now it has moved nearer to circuit type of racing format. This is sport played on an international level with races being held all around world before crowning the season winner. This way, this sport is very similar to formula one racing. The Union International Motonautique, its governing body is in Monaco. In Europe, Asia and the Middle East, the UIM regulated class 1leads the offshore powerboat racing while in the United States the racing is split between the UIM/APBA/SBI and the OSS. The American Power Boat Association (APBA) has the sole authority to hold UIM events and this includes the Divisionals, North American Championship, the worlds and the nationals.

A powerboat championship is more or less like Formula1 car racing. Powerboat racing in its grand prix style has increased its scope since its inauguration in the year 1981. The season held in 2006 had 27 drivers competing in 12 teams. At a time, there were 24 boats competing in a race. As is in Formula1 racing, championship points are supposed to be earned on the way.
